sooo the past couple of days i have been killing myself to get all my homework done for the week for my physics and buisness ethics class.

ive been doing it with my spare time at work well ive been in an accadent and cant afford a new car so i have a shitty one with a red hood now (my cars silver) amazingly it still runs great.

im acctaly really pissed at work thogh cus we got this new guy(jerry) and like for some reason hes stealing all my hours, like as the weeks go on he keeps getting more and i keep getting less. like i was heird months ago to be full time, and we was just recently heired to be part time. but now hes got 38 hours and ive only got 30 WTF and just a couple weeks ago i had 42, and theres absolutly no reason why the schedual should have changed. its getting on my nervs.

It has been a long time since I have been on anything lately I have been really busy working and such (im working at a gas station...woo meeee)

anyways im working going to davenport university now (transferd from lake superior state university) and im just kinda plucking away at my life

soo change as to what this blogs going to be about now.. I know most of you out there probly dont give a shit about little old me cus im just a normal person but whatever this is just ganna be more me to relase some steam i guess.

you dont have to read it you probly wont care about most of it but hey if you want to thats cool too. Im going to start putting up stuff like my opinions i guess and stuff like that and still try and talk about stuff that i care about (linux, computers, gaming and whatever) soo if you wanna read it thats fine if you want to comment thats fine too. Ill try and get on here once a day if i can from now on put some kind of update up.

no longer strapped to GUI apps

So I decided the other day that I wanted to be compleatly free of GUI apps for those of you who dont know (Graphical User Interface, the pictures and stuff you see on your desktop of your computer)

I decided that having all of those graphical apps where a newsance. They are a waist of space and speed. So I am going to post a screenshot with this blog. I still use X (so far) which means I have some kind of window manager. My current window manager (in the screenshot) is Openbox3. But I am looking to possibly switch to a tiling window manager such as awesome or dwm (for those who dont know [mom] the window manager is the software that manages all of the programs you run on your computer I.E. a web browser or something.) So continueing, the 2 windows open are 2 Aterms (which again if you dont know Aterm is a linux termanal emulator that supports transparencys and other neat features) both of them are transparent in my screenshot one is quite a bit bigger then the other.

I only have 1 app open persay...Which is irssi which is an IRC chat client which is connected to 2 servers: freenode and a bitlbee server. using irssi is how i talk to everybody.

bitlbee is a irc to IM gateway it allows me to talk to people threw msn aim yahoo and jabber ussing an irc client.

anyways the other window I have is a lot smaller and is located on the right side of the screen I use this along with a irssi script called nicklist.pl to show all the people in the current irc channel i am in. (i got this because i use bitlbee and wanted to have an easy way to see all my friends on my "buddy list" which is pretty much what that window is

switch from fluxbox to openbox

Ok so I was talking to some folks over at the #archlinux channel on freenode last night and they were telling me about how much cleaner openbox's code is compaired to fluxbox...so I decided to give it a try.

I installed it thinking it would only be there for a little bit.. I dont usualy like to much change. Anyways I started it up, its plain just like fluxbox is at default only without a panel...one thing I liked about fluxbox was that panel thingy...I like to have a systray for various things like a little email checker and the sorts. I asked about it on irc to see what they would sugest first one I here is pypanel....I have tested pypanel before but never really had the use for it and i know its a decent panel that is small and useful so I went with that.

a couple quick configs for pypanel...then some quick application settings for openbox...a menu config and some keyboard shortcuts later...I had a perfectly running openbox desktop...and I will tell you what...its pretty good. There are things I miss about fluxbox...but for the most part openbox seems much better, cleaner and faster. So I have decided to stick with it...

your own webspace on my server

Ok. So this is a kinda lame feature, but I said what the hell and decided to make it so that users on my server can have their own webspace.

If you want to take advantage of this contact me. I will creat a user account for you with a password. Then I will email you back and probly sugest you to change your password because it will probly be lame and easy to break.

After that everything is pretty much up to you. You can ssh into my server and just use one of the many (few) text editors that I have installed on the system (vim and nano). Or you can write the entire page on your own machine and upload it with your own or my web based ftp client that is located on my site. There are two requirements.

1. There has to be an Index.(html,php) file.

2. Every file you use must be under the public_html folder.

To access your webspace you should type in the following into the address bar of your favoret browser.

http://kpstuff.servebeer.com//

be sure to replace with your username otherwise you will not get to your webspace.

new gmail account for my servers

Last night I created a GMail account for my server. This will be where I would like to recive all things related to my server. If you just want to talk to me please use my regular screen names/emails. The account name for my server is kpserver2@gmail.com. Also I have set it up so that it will be logged into GTalk as well so you can send me messages from that. thank you. Also this is a kinda slow way if you Really want to discuss something connect to my irc server. Just open up your fancy irc client and connect to kpstuff.servebeer.com. I will have my admin user always in the #kpserver channel so come and send messages and other things please. Thank yo.

Fluxbox apps file

As you probably know I use Fluxbox as my default Window Manager. The reason I use Fluxbox is because there are almost endless customizations you can do with it. Also it is very lightweight running at about 6.5M. Yes I know not quite as light as some of the others that run in like 1 or 2M but it is also much more powerful then those.

For example....

Fluxbox uses a ~.fluxbox/apps file which is insanely useful. It allows a user to define the specific attributes for a window. It allows you to choose were on the screen the window will appear when the program start. How big the window will be, and others
To use the apps file you need to know a little bit about the syntax.

Example entry for the apps file

[app] (role=buddy_list)
[hidden] {yes}
[position] {1024 0}
[end]

this entry will use all windows with the role of "buddy_list" and make them hidden from focus (cannot alt + tab to them) and hidden from the menubar, also it will set he position of the window (for me) on the upper right hand side of the screen. I use a display that is 1280x800 resolution so you may need to change the specific numbers for you.

other useful attributes you can use for the apps file are

[Workspace] {NUMBER} //which workspace to place window
[Dimensions] {Width Height} //size of the window
[Layer] {later number} //number of the according layer you want
2 - AboveDock
4 - Dock
6 - Top
8 - Normal
10 - Bottom
12 - Desktop
[Shaded] {yes or no} //whether you want the window to start shaded
[Tab] {yes or no} //whether you want this to be able to be alt + tabbed
[IconHidden] {yes or no} //hide from the menu bar
[FocusHidden] {yes or no} //hide from focus
[Hidden] {yes or no} //both IconHidden and FocusHidden
[Deco] {NONE|NORMAL|TOOL|TINY|BORDER|TAB} //Decoration attribute
NORMAL - standard decorations
NONE - no decorations
BORDER - like NONE except keep the X window border
TINY - titlebar with an iconify button
TOOL - titlebar only
TAB - like NONE except show external tabs only (in SVN version only)
[Sticky] {yes or no} //to be on all workspaces or not
[Close] {yes or no} //save attributes of the window on exit

Using these you can make a window do almost anything you want on start. the entry above uses the command role=buddy_list which controls the window "Buddy List" for pidgin you need to either use one of the following in that entry

name //the name of the window
class //the class of the window
title //the title of the window
role //the role of the window

To find out each of these for the window you are trying to edit, you need to use a program called "xprop" it will tell you all you need to know about the window of choice.

Also you can use the [group] flag to specify attributes of multiple windows. If you are going to use the [group] flag make sure you do NOT use the [end] flag at the end of each app you specify example of using the [group] flag

# a group that only looks for windows on the current workspace
[group] (workspace)
[app] (firefox-bin) (title=.*Mozilla Firefox.*)
[app] (opera)

battery power in the command line

i use fluxbox (a small and light waight WM and for me the idea of using other apps even if they are small like conky, to monitor my battery seems like a waist so iv decided to inform you on how to check it simply with 1 command now since my pal over at www.thelinuxblog.com just made a post like exactly like this just to inform you i did not steal the idea haha we just think alike i guess....i acctualy just recently used this because of some reasons and was looking some stuff up about it whcih is why i decided to make a post about it...

code to see all neat info about your battery:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info

code to see things like a little less info but still usefull:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state

code to see the remaining battery capacity:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state | grep remaining

finaly to figure this out for percentage you need to devide this number by the total capacity of your batter which you can find with the above commands i know a little difficult but hey its good to know if your in a pinch and remember this is linux only cant do this in windows ....

also you may need to change the diriectory of your battery sometimes it can be in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/ rather then BAT1

pals over at thelinuxblog also mentioned something that i did no think of a program called yacpi which tells you all sorts of need power related information in your system...good stuff to know as well but be sure to check out that blog to read they have wonderful posts and many too.

linux + flash 9 and audio

ok so ive got flash 9 installed for my machine and i tried watching a from first to last video but i got no sound.... did a little research and found out that flash 9 only works with oss which i did not know and dont have oss support in my kernel...so i just enabled that and its compiling right now

on irc i was told to enable oss support and hope hahah well we will see ill update this post if it works or not

ok so after tyring a few other distros...freebsd,linux mint, and zenwalk(again) i have made my choice (again) for my distro...

i use gentoo and gentoo only it is the only distro that i like..perfect package management along with great customization and a speedy system is in fact the way i go...

new desktop screenshot switched back to fluxbox from fvwm-crystal because i wanted a little more speed and with 1280x800 i want all the screen space i can get

so ive said it before and ill say it agin hear use gentoo its the best

mint linux trying out

so i decided that it was time for me to install a new distro on my laptop i know i know i LOVE gentoo and still do it was just time for a change and with me anything installed on my systems for more then a month is amazing so i decided i would try this out...

ok my comments about this distro so far

easy and quick to install and setup install and setup took down low in the 10 - 20 minute range witch is very low considering im switching from gentoo

ok first login asked me if i wanted to enable root which is something that i missed in ubuntu

after that it told me it couldent connect to any network (i have a broadcom wifi card) and no cable was plugged in...i plugged it in and it went up popped the restricted drivers manager checked the wifi driver and ati worked great

after i rebooted with everything working i clicked on the network config tool told it to automaticly connect to my wifi and bam i was connected

one thing in paticular i like about mint is its update manager...i like it better then some others because it shows a list of updates and it shows wheather or not they can effect the stability of your machine using a big picture like "3" "4" and "5" thats something i liek a lot however i like having the best of the best so i install everything

ok now my real opinion after i just told you that this has lots of neat features and is easy to setup

if this is wear linux is headed as we aproch the future...I HATE IT...this system is a linux version of vista...thats what i get

i understand that this is supposed to be easy and comforting for a long time windows user to move to however this utterly sucks i cannot stress how much linux is not windows and we need to stop making distros that by default look and act identical to it. as soon as i logged into this i missed my gentoo even more...now with all distros of linux i can customize this as i wish but whats the point of even installing this distro....i mean come on this is pointless anyways it has a good update manager woooo yay put the manager and other special software into the ubuntu/debian/and other deb based systems repos so that they can use it and stop there.

i stress this to all the 3 people that read my blog dont freaking use mint linux it is a waist of time if you want a ubuntu based system use ubuntu its the original and at least it doenst by default make itself look like vista and if you want a system that just works use gentoo it is the best

one more thing...this default gui/theme has so much freaking green it makes me want to puke

so today i was walking from one of my classes and i say a sing that said "american cross blood drive"

now i had never given blood before and i was quite scared but i said to myself i should do it because i love helping people and well this is a way to possibly save 3 lives so i said why the hell not...

anyways went in there did it took about 6 or 7 minutes and it really didnt hurt just a little pinch not to bad though i needed food afterwords but yay they give you food oo and juice

anyways yeah feel good now i did a good thing and it was worth it

so yes today i was in one of my cs classes and our prof. decided to do one of the oldest things ever for us to custom build a machine..not acctualy build it but to scout the parts and such... he gave us a list of specs that we could use and also alowed us with a $3000 spending limit for our machine

while we were going over the specs for the assingment our prof. told u that the person who wold be using this machine would be running a copy of debian etch with a 2.6 kernel (after 11 because of usb support problems he had to mention).

after this one of my classmates decided to speak up....he said "Our we to assume that Dr. Z[the person we are building the machine for] has a copy of debian etch or are we to buy him a copy?"......

at this point in time i am laughing my ass off because it was the most funny thing i had ever herd.....here we are in a cs class with a pile of geeks all in one room and this kid doesnt know that linux is free....its like WTF. we will look past the point that its free for a second, because im pretty sure this kid had never acctualy herd of linux before at all let alone use it or know that its free...but HES a CS major or at least a CN major like myself why in the world would he not know this

yeah so i looked at gamespot and saw that this had a good rating so i decided to pick it up for my psp i played it for a bit and thought hey this game is great fun and everything but then comes a part were you have to race.....and the controls are SOOOOO HORRIBLE that it makes me never want to play the game ever again so i suggest that nobody get this game because if your not very tollarent with horrible controls your going to be throwing your psp in no time

so yes the gOS live cd has been released....here

yesi tried it of course booted up the live cd and wow runs fantasic for a live cd... gOS is supposed to make it supprisingly easy to use google and other open source apps very easy... being able to use google apps effitantly means good use of a web brower... there is a nice integration between firefox and the desktop...and since it runs on the enlightenment desktop enviornment it looks extreamly pretty and yet runs super fast and uses very little resources...

its based on ubuntu so installing it is a snap maybe 10 minutes max to install i would say then you update it and BAM your good to go i tested it on an nvidia card so i dont know how well it runs on other cards but for me it ran very well with the drivers that come with it... i would call this the walmart distro becuase you can get it at walmart with a nice little machiine as well that it is preinstalled on and yes that is true (read it on digg) haha so yes this post is sucking right now so i think im going to end it

Text based adventure game

ok so for my cs121 (c++) class i have to wright a simple text based adventure game...now

my professor insistes i use his parser (part of the program that reads in a certen verb and returns a value for that verb) however i didnt like that because i couldent mess with it on my own machine... i had to ssh to his machine and also i couldent run it on mine or any windows machine because all he gave us for the parser was just the object file and not the source for the parser...not cool

either way i spent a lot of time today wrighting a parser that will act almost identical to his parser ...scaled down though because there are some features of his that i dont need for my game...

and i did this all so i could let other people like YOU test it laugh at it...its very very simple and itsnt to tough to figure out if your a fan of these types of games but either way its kinda cool...

oh yeah and remember its NOT finished not even remotel close

now that its been like months since ive posted what im running on my system now....
well not much has changed in the os/distro that im using still using gentoo linux...becuase well its still the best haha yeah but now i am constantly on irc with irssi as my client i really like it...

irssi is a console based irc client based on ncurses...it runs very very well and makes great use of the console its fast and relaiable plus along with the scripts makes it fantastic

for my desktop enviornment im running fvwm-crystal...i love it because its fast lightwaght but it also provieds an entire desktop environment with an applications menu/launcher a taskbar a system try and a pager....even has built in support for acpi and cpu frequncy monitoring...one of the best things about it is the music player compatiblity it has a bar with a couple buttons wich lets you control various functions of YOUR music player has support for many of them however i use mpd because i like the dameon based idea of it...so yeah thats it for gui im ALWAYS looking for a new and better gui for me so if you know of one dont be shy to tell me

gentoo + fluxbox +laptop = CRAZY FAST

ok so i was sick of having my messy install of gentoo on my laptop so i said whatever lets reinstall and this time ill speed things up by using a slimmed down window manager ie. IceWM, blackbox, fluxbox, and openbox (those are the most common)

ok so i did a little research to find out which is the best,

ok firs there is blackbox this is the original, openbox and fluxbox and a few other window managers are based off this wow must be good right? wrong its acctualy harder to use i felt (however some others would probly dissagree)

second i tried openbox, at first look i noticed the toolbar at the bottom that i didnt see in blackbox by default COOL !!!!

after blackbox theres fluxbox, now basicly i looked around a bit and found that even though fluxbox and openbox are acctualy almost identical fluxbox rules over openbox in a few ways

1 it comes with an automatic menu generator were i found that openbox lacked this (it might not but i couldent find it) they are acctualy both bad at generating the menu a gui app for this would be better but im no programmer

2 it seems to be more updated now again dont go by what i say there could be some people someweare updating openbox all the time i just dont know about them

ok so i decided to go with fluxbox in the end

ok so a window manager which you can tell by the name does exactly that it manages the windows nothing else no icons on the desktop or background for the desktop for this you need other apps

i looked around a bit and saw that feh was a good app for managing the desktop wallpaper so i grabbed that 1 command and wow works perfectly shoved it into the ~/.fluxbox/start file and i was good to go also feh was better then some others because it supported transparency for the windows and menus

ok so we all like to have somthing on the desktop to click and launch right? ok maybe not not everybody likes it but i like to have some on the bottom so i grabbed a program called idesk you can use the rox desktop for this too they both seem fairly even in how well they do it and they both also have a script for managing the desktop wallpaper into with them i just chose to use a smaller faster program for that.... anyways down to buisness looked online a little and found a config file for idesk created ~/.idesktop and added a few *.lnk files with the right info and bam shortcuts on the desktop easy and uses very little ram

then i grabbed conky (i know you all know what that is but if you dont) a sweet little app that runs on your desktop and shows you info about your system runs on very little and is very fast and flexible and also very customizable

after that i just used it very very fast runs GREAT i love it not as pretty as things liek kde, gnome, or xfce and doesnt wont let you use things like bery/compiz because well beryl and compiz are window manager which is the same thing as fluxbox and you cant have 2 running at the same time

so this is like a 2 day late post but hey im lazy

so basicly the first release of the pidgin instant messanger program is out

this is the the first relase after the name change from gaim to pidgin

pidgin-2.0beta7 is said by the people over there working on it that even though the beta releases of gaim before it were very stable and they acctualy recomend them over the previous stable 1.5.0 release 2.0beta7 is an acctual beta being that it is truly unstable

however i have been using if for a while with my 6 accounts (2 aim, 2 yim, 1 msn, and 1 google talk) and threw everything it seems very stable i havent acctualy found 1 bug in it

next we see that it acctualy looks a wee bit differnt, they changed the icons basicly and now instead of differnt icons for differnt clients they all have the same icon....ok now some of you might think that is odd and stupid and you dont like it but me i acctualy kinda like it....1 because you dont need that extra icon and 2 it saves on ram usage now i know that that isnt a very big about of ram we are talkng maybe what 3k thats nothting but hey its less ram and im all about that

but well this is getting pretty damn long so im ganna wrap it up

in conclusion i think that this release is the best release of the gaim/pidgin instant messanger client yet and i anxiously await for the upcomming stable release predicted for later this week\

it is a source based distro which means that it compiles every peice of software fromt he source code so that it will be optimised for your machine

well ive been experimenting with a new multi-protocal chat client

for those losers of you that dont know what that is it is a chat program such as aim or msn live messanger however since its multi-protocla it can connect to many differnt protocals at the same time

say you have an aim acctount a yahoo account and a msn one as well what do you do use 3 differnt pices of software...

ha noooo!!!!! you use 1 special pice that does it all

there are lots of pieces of software that do this such as trillian and gaim however each of them have ups and downs such as trillians crazy resource usage but it also have a very pretty gui that you can theme yourself...kinda?

and gaim on the other hand has almost the opposite it runs on a nice comfertable 25megs of ram which isnt so bad however has little or no theme support unless your very fammiler with gtk

and since most people dont even know what that is ill just assume you dont anyways

well miranda im incorprates a very small footprint like 10megs of ram(less then half of gaim) and also has support for a 100% themeable/sinnable gui...you can literly make it anyway you want it

it is beautiful in its own sence because people make it look beautiful to them or match there currnent theme for there pc they have now.....

it runs smooth and has an array of plugins for it so that you can do just about anything you want...

this being said there are bugs...

it is not as well devloped as clients like trillian and hasent been around as long as gaim...

however this client i have noticed has a lot less bugs in it then gaim and is acctualy a lot easyer to use (mostly because you can configure the gui however you want)..

the overall score that miranda has on www.betanews.com is a 4.6/5 which in my expeiance is a good score...

however if i were to score this myself a 5 it would get from me.... i love it best chat client ive ever used...

another thing ive noticed in my extensve time reviwing apps is that the smaller an app is (I.E. mirandas install file is 1.9 megs) the better the program usualy is

so i sugesst you check it out and if not miranda check out gaim or even trillian

ok so its been a few days since my last post (sorry) just havent found anything worth reviwing really

well on with it then i had herd about an image editing program called "paint.net" yes that is an odd name well i herd about it a lont time ago when i was still using photoshop.....yes i knwo paying for software ha whats the worth..

anyways then i found the gimp and imediatly switched...better easyer to use platform independent and free

well always thought that was a great little thing to use and all i would ever need.. then i decided to check out paint.net just for the hell of it.....

well i can honestly say i love it i dont know what it is but i just feel comfertabel and organized when i use it unlike photoshop and the gimp were there are so many things and you dont have a clue were half of them are or what they do or even if you need them...

with paint.net it comes with the basics that you would want in every editor but has a vast a easy to creat plugin system so if you dont have the tool you want you can most likly find one in there fourms or make one yourself....

i knwo im getting this reviw out there really late since paint.net has been around for a long time but hey what do you want me to do im only 1 person...

but i think that this is my favoret image editor that ive used so far the only thing that i have noticed is that there is no select channel range so that i can remove all white spaces or all black color or red or green

i really like that in photoshop you can do that but i guess they havent created that plugin yet for paint.net but if you can deal without that then i suggest you make a look at this awsome image editor

avg anti-spyware

i was just looking for some new software and i came across this now everybody knows about the power and precision of avg anti-virus....my favoret anti-virus out there by far....

anyways thought i would check this out

first thing youll notice is that this has the same update priority as avg anti-virus has basicly youd better freaking update it as soon as you get it theres normaly something new..

second is the gui...its very pretty and really easy to use

also you can set up profiles if you want to scan 1 thing at 1 time and something else at another this may come in handy...(i dont really care for it since i just go ahead and scan everything at once) so i sugest everybody check it out its like spybot seach and destroy only with a sheild and a schedular. check it out

todays entry is going to be my review of the most recent version of vista

well basicly ive fallen in love more every second i use it...

from what i can see vista makes use of all your resourcs on your computer not just the processor as previous versions have...

ive noteced so far that the graphics and animations run very well on my not so fast pc...this surprised me because i herd of how slow the graphics are supposed to make the os run

my favoret feature so far is definitely the sidebar...customizable+flexible=very good

i love math

but not as much as i love vista it run very well i installed itunes 7 on here and well all i can say is wow...it runs much better in vista then it ever did in windows...i have no idea why possible the graphics engine that is in vista but i dont know

but seriously from what i can see it has the possibility to be the best windows os ever....yes even better then WFW 3.11 i know crazy right

this is a highspeed network driver that is supposed to increase your bandwith and decrease ping time for your network connection...

well being like most gamers out out there i wanted to decrease my ping time so i get less lag in games...

to check if this gave me any change at all i first started a command prompt(windows) and typed
"> ping www.google.com"

in return i got values from 140ms up to 190ms

next i installed cFosSpeed and set the priority to ping time

then i went back into the command prompt to see if my ping had changed....

i pinged google again and my highest ping time i got in returne was 23ms

now i dont know about you but that is a drastic differntce from 140ms....

i was like woo hoo yippy....

however theres a drawback after installing it i started up WarRock (the game i wanted to play)

it would not connect at all...

wtf right well i guess cFosSpeed is sort of a built in firewall not allowing applications to connect to the internet if it dosnt know what they are...

i dont like this and i havent figured out a way to get around it yet if i do ill let you people know

in the mean time i suggest that everybody check out the free trial at least www.cfos.de

today i had a cs105 lab and.....

wrote it using delphi 6 by Borland

its not the most extensive program ever created

yes thats all the time i gave it..ok well basicly i hate the way the graphics are

just dont like the style they used...

also its very bandwith unfreindly need a super fast connection to play it now i can play guild wars just fine on the same connection and theres way more things to do in that game...

one thing i do like about it is the ability to change everything about your charicter

musikcube is by far the best media player i have ever used

ist still in development which means its not bug free but its great

it uses as little as 2MB of ram which is less then the smallest media players

such as winamp and foobar use the best out there doesnt have support for

ipods or other mp3 players or even super cool skins but is great none the less

support for things like internet radio and various formats

also has support for user made plugins and for user made format files

so if theres a format you use that it doesnt have support for you can make a plugin

for it please check it out

it is a program based on the mozilla engine that is buit to play music files

being based on mozilla it has built in web browsing support and for extensions
